What is Yoga?

When you find a nice flat rock, you should sit on it.

According to Wikipedia, Yoga refers to traditional physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines, originating in India, whose goal is the attainment of a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility. The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Say what now? Let me break it down for you…

The truth is yoga has many definitions. No one is quite sure how yoga began but it has been around for over 5,000 years. For some, it is merely a physical exercise focused on flexibility. For others, it is a mind and body practice.

Traditionally,  yoga revolves around three main ideas: exercise, breathing and meditation. There are over a hundred different schools of yoga – each with their own philosophy and style. Some of the more well-known schools are Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa, Iyengar and Bikram.

Still not quite sure? That’s okay. But let me tell you this: Yoga is NOT a religion. Many religions have integrated yoga into their rituals but it is not tied to a specific religion.

What are the benefits of yoga?
Why don’t we ask Sting? Just kidding. As more and more people started to practice yoga, its benefits have also gained respect and acceptance. Yoga has been known to help in managing stress and improving health and well-being.

Who can practice yoga?
Everyone. No really. Everyone.
